More than three million lights across the nation's oldest city — how to see it without the worst of the crowds.
Every winter, St. Augustine's historic district is covered in more than three million tiny white lights — on the Bridge of Lions, across the Plaza de la Constitución, along the bayfront, and over the balconies and courtyards of the old town. National Geographic has named it one of the best holiday light displays in the world.
The display itself is free. You can park, walk the historic district, and see the whole thing without buying a ticket to anything.
The season traditionally opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving and runs into mid-January. The 2026–27 season — the 33rd annual — runs November 21, 2026 through January 18, 2027. Because opening night moves with the calendar each year, confirm current dates with the city or the local visitors bureau before planning a trip around it.
Nights of Lights is the anchor for a cluster of other seasonal traditions:
For residents, Nights of Lights is the clearest example of what living in St. Augustine actually offers: a world-recognized event, free, a short walk or drive from home, for two months of the year. It's also worth knowing if you're house hunting — downtown and Anastasia Island traffic changes noticeably during the season. Our St. Augustine community guide and neighborhood guides cover what each area is like day to day.
